Rope Rescue

Rope rescue is the foundation of nearly every technical rescue discipline — from grain bins to ice rescue, confined space, and swiftwater. At Pioneer Rescue, we deliver hands-on rope rescue training tailored to your environment and operational needs. Our courses range from foundational Low Angle slope evacuations to advanced High Angle operations, equipping public safety professionals with the systems, confidence, and decision-making skills to perform safely and effectively. Whether your team works wooded hills, gravel pits, elevated highways, or vertical structures, our instructors bring real-world experience and a full gear cache to train right where you operate.

Operations Level
Low Angle Rescue / Slope Evacuation

Our Rope Rescue Operations course focuses on terrain between 15 and 45 degrees — the kinds of slopes that make patient access difficult, but don’t require full vertical systems. This is the level most departments start with, covering the fundamental skills that form the base for all technical rescue disciplines. Through hands-on practice, students learn safe movement on slopes, basic rigging and anchors, litter handling, and team communication.

It’s practical, field-ready training designed for the real-world environments your crews operate in every day — from gravel pits to embankments and wooded terrain.

Topics Covered:

including, but not limited to,

  • Methods
  • Knots & Anchors
  • Hardware
  • Systems
  • NFPA Ratings
  • Patient Handling
  • Haul Teams/Litter Teams
  • Basic Evolutions and Incident Management

Technician Level
High Angle Rope Rescue

The Rope Rescue Technician course builds on Operations and takes those skills vertical. High angle work introduces steeper slopes — over 45 degrees and up to fully inverted positions — and more advanced systems for both rescuer and patient movement. Students learn complex rigging, edge transitions, litter tending, and vertical team coordination. These same techniques extend into other specialized scenarios like grain bin rescues, confined space vertical entries, tough terrain, and even tree stand rescues. This course pushes students’ problem-solving and precision under pressure, building the technical mastery that defines a well-rounded rescue professional.

Prerequisite: Proof of completion of an Operations level class or equivalent within the last 3 years.

Topics Covered:

Including, but not limited to,

  • Review of Ops Skills
  • Advanced Systems – higher level mechanical advantages, highlines
  • Rope Management
  • Rappelling
  • Patient Handling (emphasis on vertical)
  • Litter Tending
  • Simulated Rescues
  • Challenging Scenarios

Custom & Advanced Ropes

Beyond our core certification programs, we frequently design custom rope rescue courses to meet the unique challenges of individual departments. From advanced highline systems and specialized vertical access to team refreshers or hybrid rope-and-water operations, our instructors can tailor training to match your equipment, terrain, and operational goals. Whether you’re refining existing skills or building a specialized program from the ground up, we’ll help you create the course that fits your team best.  Contact us to discuss how we can help!

Department Spotlight -
Turning a Real Risk Area into a Training Ground:

One department we’ve partnered with has a popular recreation area where a shallow river cuts between two steep cliffs. Swimmers sometimes jump from the cliffs into a deeper pool — but when injuries occur, rescuers face limited access and challenging terrain. We developed custom scenarios with their team at that exact site, working through anchor placement, access routes, and highline rigging across the river.

The result: a proven system that allows rescuers to reach, package, and recover patients safely and effectively without compromising team safety — all designed around their actual environment and resources.
